Before it was widely known as Halloween, it was first called Samhain which is an ancient Celtic festival celebrated to acknowledge the transition of season as the summer ends and the winter begins. It was first celebrated on Ireland 2000 years ago where people believe that this time of the year is the time for the spirits of all people who died that year will move on to the what we called ‘next life’. It was later Christianize and was named Halloween which means ‘All Hallow’s evening’, catholic church also dedicated November 2 to honor the dead and called it ‘All soul’s day’.
Trick or Treat
Trick or treat is an activity during Halloween which is done by almost all people in most countries as part of their celebration of Halloween season, but do you know that this trick or treat activity was originally came from North America, where during the Halloween season, poor people will go and visits the houses of wealthier people or neighbors to ask for a ‘soul cake’ which is a form of shortbread, and in return, that poor people will promise to pray for the dead of the household who gave them a treat. A few years ago when this practice is taken and adopted by the children and was later pass on by the next generations and so on, it has become a traditional activities done during Halloween where children will go door to door and ask for gifts which are usually given in the form of sweets and candies.
Wearing Halloween Costumes
Halloween costumes is sure to add a lot of fun to your Halloween, some people also wears spooky costume to scare people especially kids, this has also been an important part of the Halloween celebration for most people, but aside from this reason of wearing costumes during Halloween season, do you know that it also has its own origin? 2000 years ago when Halloween was first celebrated, Celts believe that Halloween season is the time where the dead goes back to earth and they are very worried that they’ll bump into one of the ghost during Halloween, so it has been a tradition to wear mask or costumes so ghost will not recognize them and think that they were their fellow ghost instead. As of today, people wears costume as a fun tradition during Halloween, but surely, the true reasons lies behind it.
Jack O’ Lanterns
You are probably seeing a lot of lantern made from a pumpkin or what we called a Jack O’ Lantern, this may seems a perfect design for Halloween but this was actually done for a reason. Way back the earlier times, an old tradition of carving faces and putting a candle light inside a pumpkin was believe to be done during Halloween to scare bad spirits and evil away from your home. It also serves as a guiding light for the lost souls roaming around so they can find their way in peace. Although nowadays, a lot of Halloween designs have existed using a Jack O’ Lantern form like a Halloween basket for trick or treat that has the look of a pumpkin with carved faces, Jack O’ Lantern is still one of thing that symbolizes Halloween.
Black and Orange Color
Have you ever wonder why orange and black has been the color of the Halloween? Since it was originated from the Samhain festival, the orange and black color was actually connected and originated from such festival, orange color symbolizes the color of the crops and turning leaves, just like what an autumn season look likes, while the dark color marks the death of the summer season and the upcoming winter season which brings darkness. But as of today, many different colors has been added to the Halloween like purple and red, which most people finds more creative.
